On-Grid Robotic Pick

OCADEX / Pick

Unlock Up to 99% Labor Savings With On-Grid Robotic Pick, Directly On The OSRS Grid.

On-Grid Robotic Pick is a robotic arm solution for the Ocado storage and retrieval system (OSRS), combining dexterous arm hardware with proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) software.

Combining cutting-edge computer vision and advanced sensing, robotic pick identifies, picks and packs items from storage bins directly on the OSRS grid.

Using deep reinforcement learning, Pick trains itself to make faster, more dexterous handling decisions on the fly—learning to pick up items it has never touched before, protecting delicate items from damage and maximizing packing density.

With each pick arm occupying a single cell on top of the OSRS grid, robots are able to coordinate and travel efficiently to fetch and drop off inventory into Pick’s eight adjacent grid cells. This maintains optimal traffic levels and unlocks a highly cost effective solution.

Key Features

On-Grid Robotic Pick uses cutting-edge computer vision, sensing and machine learning (ML) to pick and pack inventory vastly more efficiently than traditional methods by maintaining consistency, accuracy and availability.

Robot Collaboration Coordinates with robots on the grid to pick and pack in up to eight cells.
Smart Recognition Can be configured to scan and identify items to ensure exceptionally high order accuracy.
Ocado Intelligence Using reinforcement learning, Pick adapts to handle new, even delicate, items.
Behavioral Cloning For more complex items, human-led picking is studied and mimicked by the robot.
High-Density Packing Closely packs items to keep tote space efficiently filled and maximize system economics.
24/7 Human Support Backed-up by a ‘remote pilot’ to intervene and handle the rare exceptions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about On-Grid Robotic Pick, part of the OCADEX range of robotic arms.
What is OCADEX/Pick? OCADEX/Pick is an on-grid robotic picking solution for OSRS, combining dexterous robotic arm hardware with proprietary artificial intelligence (AI) software.
How many picks per hour can an OCADEX/Pick robotic arm achieve? Pick has a theoretical maximum of 630 units per hour (UPH). However, real world performance varies based on the size and complexity of the item to be picked.
How does robotic picking deal with exceptions? Pick robotic arms use reinforcement learning, a type of AI, to learn how to handle new items delicately and share this knowledge with other robots, reducing errors. If an anomaly arises, such as damaged packaging, our 'remote pilot' system enables a human to take control and manage the exception.
Is OCADEX/Pick deployed in live sites? Yes, Pick robotic arm technology has been deployed in several of our customer fulfillment centers (CFCs) within our grocery business. Currently, there are over 50 robotic pick arms in active operation across these facilities.
